Visit wineries big and small, including a rustic wine cave with a 450-year-old wine press set high in the steep slopes of the valley. This visit is exclusive and not open to the general public. You’ll taste a wide variety of the valley’s dry and fruity whites, as well as sampling other local delicacies like the valley’s famed apricot jams and liqueurs. During free time, explore the medieval town of Dürnstein, a well-known Wachau highlight, overlooked by a castle where Richard the Lionheart was once held prisoner. Then enjoy lunch in a Heuriger, a traditional family-run Austrian wine tavern.

Sit back as you ride you through quaint villages and picturesque vineyard landscapes. End the day with a relaxing one-hour scenic boat cruise from Spitz to Krems, where you can take in the valley from yet another perspective—the middle of the majestic River Danube.

Krems - Kloster UND - Kloster UND in Krems was originally an old Capuchin Monastery, built over 400 years ago. It was recently renovated and converted into its present status as a classy Vinotek, cafe and seminar center. Kloster UND showcases some of Austria's best wine producers. Here you will have the chance to sample some great wines and warm up your palate for a day of tasting. An alternative winery of the same standard is visited on Monday, Sunday and public holidays.

Dürnstein - Richard the Lion Heart's Prison - A day in the Wachau is not complete without a visit to the UNESCO listed Dürnstein. This medieval town perched atop the Dürnberg made its fame when knights of the town imprisoned Richard the Lion Heart in 1192. Here you will have time to wander the streets or explore the castle ruins.

Taste and Beauty - Dürnstein - Your time in Dürnstein will also include a chocolate, jam and liquor tasting. Sample goodies produced from local stone fruits and other locally grown produce. Specialties include Apricot Brandy, Rabbit Droppings Chocolate and Apple Cinnamon Liquor. They also produce a range of natural cosmetics and beauty products.

Weissenkirchen - the Home of Riesling Wine - With an array of family operated wine taverns in the town, this is the perfect place for lunch and to mingle with the locals. You will visit Heurigen, a family run wine tavern where you'll have the opportunity to purchase wine and wonderful food in a stunning outdoor setting.

Winery Jamek - Schnapps and Wine - You will visit one of the Wachau's more traditional wineries - the wine cellar of Family Jamek, which is oozing with rustic charm. Taste wine and schnapps made using traditional methods. Their cellar showcases an old oak press that is over 450 years old and still in operation today. Often, you will get to meet the winemaker and if the season is right, taste wine direct from the barrels!

Spitz - Winery Lagler - Winery Lagler is another family operated winery with a more modern approach to wine production. See the variety of Family Lagler's high quality wine that includes Riesling from the Tausendeimerberg (1000 Bucket Hill).

Melk - The town of Melk is located at the western end of the Wachau Valley. This picturesque town hosts many authentic gift shops, cafes and the famous Benedictine Abbey. Spend the afternoon wandering the town and explore at your own pace.

Melk Abbey or Stift Mel - This is an Austrian Benedictine Abbey and one of the world's most famous monastic sites. It is located above the town of Melk on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Danube. The Abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria gave one of his castles to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey. A monastic school, the Stiftgymnasium Melk, was founded in the 12th century. The monastic library here would eventually become renowned for its extensive manuscript collection and the monastery's scriptorium was also a major site for the production of manuscripts. In the 15th century the Abbey became the center of the Melk Reform movement which reinvigorated the monastic life of Austria and Southern Germany.
