Vienna Woods - Mayerling Tour in Austria
See the Vienna Woods and Mayerling This half-day excursion shows you the most beautiful sights of the southern part of Vienna Woods. We'll pass the Roman City of Baden - famous for its thermal springs; then we drive through the romantic Valley Helenental to the former Mayerling Hunting Lodge. You'll visit the memorial chapel where Crown Prince Rudolph, together with Baroness Vetsera, died tragically in 1889. In the 12th Century Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, you visit the medieval cloister which houses the remains of the last of the Babenbergers. We then pass the Höldrichsmühle and arrive at the Seegrotte for a boat ride on the largest subterranean lake in Europe. After your experience at the Seegrotte, you leave the Vienna Woods and return to Vienna, finishing at the Opera House.

Mayerling Hunting Lodge The former Mayerling Hunting Lodge is today a commemorative chapel in Lower Austria, in honor of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, only son of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and heir to the Austro-Hungarian crown. Rudolf was found dead with his mistress - Baroness Mary Vetsera - the two apparently having committed suicide. Exactly what happened is clouded in mystery. After their deaths there, the hunting lodge became a convent for nuns of the Carmelite Order. Seegrotte A stupendous catastrophe is responsible for the fact that southern Lower Austria is harboring one of the most spectacular natural monuments in the world today - the "SEEGROTTE" in Hinterbrühl. In 1912, an underground blasting operation in the Hinterbrühl gypsum mine went awry and caused 20 million liters of water to gush forth from behind the rock. The lower level galleries and adits of the mine were flooded, creating the largest subterranean lake in all of Europe. Tour includes hotel pickups but not dropoffs; this tour ends at the Vienna Opera House. Rates are per person in US dollars. Child rates apply to ages 3 to 12; children 2 and under are free.
